And at the same time, last Sunday in France, anti-gay-marriage hordes were out at it again.
*Le Sigh*.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8311151968716514867.post-41038806587458970532014-10-05T01:08:15.473-07:002014-10-05T01:08:15.473-07:00I agree. It is ridiculous, if we could agree on anything, you would think it would be math, no?orenetahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10616103982088424715noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8311151968716514867.post-24693763718372618542014-10-04T01:32:09.036-07:002014-10-04T01:32:09.036-07:00Hmm. Though I am happy to see the news of the Catalan legislation-- I'll have to look that up to get more info. That's huge!

I first encountered the billion conundrum while teaching math (actually I was studying for my Spanish teaching degree, not yet teaching)but I thought it was a Spain thing-- didn't realize that in the UK it was the same.

Ok, just looked it up:

In British English, a billion used to be equivalent to a million million (i.e. 1,000,000,000,000), while in American English it has always equated to a thousand million (i.e. 1,000,000,000). British English has now adopted the American figure, though, so that a billion equals a thousand million in both varieties of English.

The same sort of change has taken place with the meaning of trillion. In British English, a trillion used to mean a million million million (i.e. 1,000,000,000,000,000,000). Nowadays, it's generally held to be equivalent to a million million (1,000,000,000,000), as it is in American English.

Interesting. You'd think the one thing you could count on for objectivity would be numbers.

Oh well.katehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16975826433125245969noreply@blogger.com
