I have wonderful memories of gathering hazelnuts in my childhood. They grew in the house where we lived which had an old orchard, it had been a farmhouse, pre second world war but was taken over as a base for the nearby airport and then was rented out. Hazelnuts taken fresh like these are sooo good. Sea Dog
I am by no means an expert, but the woman I was with told me that to pick them off the ground, that said, most of the tree was on the other side of a wall so climbing it wasn't an option, I'll ask Sea Dog, he may know more....

they are!!!! I didn't recognize them in their cases until a friend pointed them out to me. MMmmmmmm.
How do you know they're ready for consumption, though? When they're on the ground?
