The recorder....oh my.

Eldest has to play the recorder for school (why do they inflict this torture on us?).

She is working hard, and almost sounding musical, but I would say that Chuck doesn't approve. He walked up, literally wiped his nose on the sheet of music on her lap, scrubbed his face on the couch like he had been smeared with jam, and as he was walking away he tossed one grumpy grumbly woof over his shoulder at her before lying down in his box. Poor dog must suffer more than the rest of us with his superior hearing.

..........later.................

It is almost starting to sound like a discernible tune!

I had to learn the recorder at school and I remember practicing once and Trad, the dog we had at the time, started howling! I was rather insulted but have since learned that dog howl to music because it's taking them back to some wolf communicating thing - still rather insulting actually

At least it isn't the violin. That is the ultimate torure instrument until learnt. Kieran tried and failed, as did my sister many years ago. There is a picture of my mum and grandmother "listening" as my sister practised. If I can find it one day I'll publish on the blog. Two more pained faces you shall never see. T

I agree, the violin has got to be infinately worse, I am not even all THAT fond of it when it is well played. Still, couldn't they play something a little more soothing, like a guitar?

the recorder. i contest that it is NOT an instrument, other than an instrument of torture.

My sympathies. Since I passes my music exam, my recorder-playing days are over, at least for now.

Did you ever read the Harry books (Harry The Dirty Dog, No Roses For Harry, etc) There's one called Harry and The Lady Next Door-- the poor dog is so bothered by the neighbor's music that he tries to stop it. It's in my Amazon shopping cart right now. Poor Chuck.

mmichele...it really is, why DO they do that, I assume because it is cheap and easy to play, but YEe gods it is awful.

Kate, I DO remember those Harry books, but not the one about the lady next door....I'm heading to Amazon right now....which Amazon do you use? UK?

Oh, the recorder. I remember well that little bit of third grade h***. I think it's just to prepare us for that day when our child asks to play the electric guitar, or drums, or the tuba.

I used to play this in junior high. It's not that difficult, actually :)

I remember playing recorder in school. My kids didn't learn to play. T is taking drum kit lessons now, and last week practised for 3 hours a day. Small house plus 3 hours; at least I like drums and his is progressing fast since he has been in percussion for 10 years.

Hula, better drums than a violin....or flute...lord I hate that instrument. Maybe they will take up the bass violin, a bit unwieldy, but a nice sound.

LP, EVERYONE played the d*mn things at some point, because they aren't that hard, they are really hard on the ears though....

Dawn, I played it in school too, and I remember generally enjoying it. Kids are innured to high shrill loud noises, they generate most of them....I could imagine drumming, but big loud drums, hammered with my hands, not a typical rock set up for me....I would like to do it some day, though I have no idea where I would practice.
