Boots.

Can I just talk about boots here for a minute or six?

I am living in Spain. The land famed for leather, boots, shoes and purses.

Let me tell you, I cannot find a pair of boots I like in this city. Not one.

They specialise in sl*t boots. Like these....

OK, that was a lie. I did see a whole lot of pairs like that in Poland though...

No really, they look more like these.....

Now those are fine boots in their own way, but they really aren't what I am thinking about. I don't really like having a ton of anything, so when I am looking for boots, I am thinking of something that I could wear with a dress - in a slightly punkish way - and that I could wear with pants, entirely reputably, and that I could wear in the hills walking the dog. One pair to do it all, like I have to.

So I started looking at shoes, there are two main choices...

These,

or these styles....

Now all the fashion divas out there -why they are reading this blog I don't know...my sister once described me as the coolest nerd she knew. A backhanded compliment if I ever heard one, but I think accurate.

Now...back to the fashion divas, who are going to shoot me because these are SO in style right now; but can I just say that I HATE both of those styles of shoes..I am not a school girl from the fifties, and I am FAR too old for ballet flats...FAR.

A little aside about the message i'm getting from these footwear options...am I the only one who is hearing that old saw about women? V*rgin or sl*t?

Is there nothing else out there for real women?

Something like maybe this?

or even better...THESE!!!

Tough as nails, I can walk anywhere comfortably and reasonably warm, but they can be polished. No zippers to break, or elastics to wear out, so they could last me twenty years... and they aren't fussy

Lord where can I get me some for a woman's foot?????

OK, commenting on the last two pictures.

The very last one - try a leather shop for gay men. Seriously! I have a friend in Miami with those and that is where one finds them. If they serve your purpose who cares where they came from.

The second to last picture - gee, for some reason they just look very English, as in UK. Maybe try mail order?

Good luck on your hunt for the perfect boot.

these are considered "unisex" and if they weren't so damned expensive I would buy a pair. I have reached the age where I don't care what other people think of my *ahem* sense of style if I am comfortable and it's practical. Quality is important too, I hate buying cheap junk. I'd rather pay alot for one pair of shoes/boots that I'll wear pretty much all the time than on ten pairs of shoes that will fall apart, make my feet stink or ache.

and if they have good arch support, all the better. :)

at least you don't have to wear my shiny silver runners.

The second to last pair look like riding boots. A shop specialising in equestrian gear might be just the ticket. Are there many horsey people in your neck of the Euro-woods? Could be an option.

If it's any consolation, boot hunting in the Haute Savoie isn't much easier. I ask myself: Who ARE these people buying the stilletto-heel dominatrix boots that are in all the shops??? Can it be that there are THAT many S&M afficianados around here?

I can understand your despair, despite being a mere man, and agree that the last two boots would be my preference. Buy on the internet? Maybe not. Good luck anyway!

Don't ask me. It's all hooker heels and Uggs around this place. I'm currently wearing my daughter's boots from two years ago, which are way too big for my calves, but at least I don't look like a street walker. I hate having 44 year old feet.

Doug...I'm going to take that idea of the gay leather store...that is a good one especially here. The second last pair? Close...Blundstones from Australia.

and they are what Bodhi chiclet found at softmocs. Which is a store I adore in TO...but I am nervous of ordering shoes online....

Mmichele....if I could get the man to buy new shiny silver runners, he is hobbling around, insisting that his ancient decrepit runners are fine...OMG.

Beth...that's an idea, though most of them seem to wear hicking boots. Very very practical indeed....what IS it with the domenatr*x boots???

Thanks Swede, I am a little nervous of shoes, there are so many intangibles....

Hula...you!! IN HOOKER HEELS!!! you have to show some photos now...have to!

Having grown up in a snowy locale, i have never understood "boots" with super high heels liek that. You can't drive in them and if you think you're going to walk in them and not slip on the ice you're crazy! Flats may not be as sexy but they are way more practical. :)

I think that Cairo Typo chick is stalking all my regular blogging haunts.. she is there.. just ahead of me (because she never sleeps) with some incredibly witty comment... better track her down and give her a Lulu can o'whoop ass (that is my new saying for the week)

Hate the top boots..never wear anything you can run in.. thats my motto... Blundstones have always been good but I love the bottom boots... totally agree with your style.

WAIT until Xmas in Paris - BOOT HEAVEN!!!
ALL the styles you are looking for - and for GIRLS too!
Silly ballet slippers finally almost non-existant!
And by then should all be on SALE - although the shoe store opposite our place just put everything in the store on discount 30% - and they have lots of BOOTS - I am strongly resisting buying a - ahem - 4th pair ;-)

Aska...ACROSS THE STREET!!!! ON sale..maybe even I could afford Paris..and it would be so incredibly COOL to be prancing around in Parisian boots!!!
