Gross Què asco

Everyone has to do it once, I guess.  We have to learn by butting our heads up against the wall hard from time to time!  I went for a run this morning, and followed my normal routine.  A banana, a piece of toast and a mug of tea, except today I didn't have time for the cup of tea (this should have been the first warning bell).

Normally I go running at around 9:30 am, after the big boxer who likes our route has gone home, but it's getting hotter here and I've got a TON to do today, so I went earlier.  Those of you who run, can probably see where this is going.
Vosaltres qui corren, poden intuir on vaig am aquesta historia, no?

I was also feeling pressed for time, and wanted a tough work out so I was really pounding along.  Uphill.  My normal middle distance run has 380M of climbing in it, at the beginning.  So I was pushing up the hill.  I got to the top of the first big chunk and thought that I might just blow chunks.  Yup.....ate too much then exercised hard.  GROAN!
Quan he arribat cap amunt del primer tros he pensat que vomitaria.  Sí.  Menjava massa i feia massa d'exercici.  Bleurgh!

Called the man, my own personal wizard in all these things, and he assured me that if I throttled back a whole lot it would ease off.  I actually got a pretty decent run in and I learned a couple of things too.

Like timing food and exercise, but also I learned the hard (and slightly disgusting way) to bring the pace down.   Something I'm not so good at, I tend to run full bore till I can't and then walk a bit...then run again.

I am visiting my sister this weekend in PARIS!!!  with youngest, and I am hoping to run with her (she's going to run me into the ground) cause I think she is way better at controlling the pace and I'm hoping to pick up a couple of tips!!!

No posts for a couple of days...I'm outta town!  Fins la setmana que ve!  Me'n vaig!

I had a student today who was talking to me about the process of soaking meat for a couple of hours in a strongly flavoured liquid to impart the flavour to the meat, to make it yummier!

There must be a name for this in Catalan, I don't know it.  Not so unusual.  The problem was that I couldn't remember in English either.

I thought about it for hours.  I remembered all sorts of related words, brine, baste, steep, soak, brew, etc etc etc, none of which I know in Catalan either....

Finally, the man, while reading the index for the Joy of Cooking remembered the word.  He wasn't reading that page, he was in the 't's, but with book in had, he got it.

It doesn't matter how hard you work, if you live outside of your language, words disappear.

Marinade.  I still don't know in Catalan.  Google translate says escabetx, doesn't sound right to me.

A toad! Un gripau!!!

Look who turned up in the patí! Mira qui ha arribat!

We tossed him into the safareig to start with, it's full of water, and he has a good stick so that he can climb in and out.  Right now, he's hiding in a plant.
Li hem tirat al safareig (ple d'aigua) i li hem donat un bon pall que pugui pujar i baixar a l'aigua.  Ha fugit en una planta.

Sant Jordi roses

I'll admit that I'm a little late with this, but I thought I'd toss it out there anyway.  You see Youngest and I went around and we ended up going for candy roses!  Mmmmmm.
Mmmmm

Clever, no?  Són ben fetes, no?

Oh, and there's my extremely wrinkly hand!  I mira!  El meu man ple d'arrugues

Youngest actually brought me a rose she got for singing in the choir, but it is one of those beautiful ones that has no smell, well, actually it smells like a dollar store, sort of plastic-y.  The candy one was quite tasty!

More thoughts, for me to remember for the big push.

Mountain bikes totally destroy trails for walking.  It is astonishing how bad they can make a trail.

I ate:  Menjava

Before I left:  A bowl of oatmeal and a cup of tea

While walking:  2 bananas, 2 sandwiches shared with Chuck (one meat, one cheese), a cup of dates (more or less) a couple of handfuls of chips, 1 piece of chocolate (less than an ounce) 3 Cacaolats (think chocolate milk) total less than 750ml and a lot of water.  Chuck had three servings of his food (blessedly light) much more water than me (must mark his territory!) a handful of chips, part of two sandwiches.

When I got home: a plate of pasta and a cup of tea.

I slept well and long, as did Chuck.

Two hour (+) walk today at a peaceful pace (more or less 10K) easy, no problem and as the route planned for the long walk is considerably flatter than the more or less 500M of climbing and descending I did today, it'll be easier still.

Some stiffness and tiredness in my legs, none or nearly none in my neck and shoulders (which is frankly surprising considering the weight of food I carried) feet fine.  Chuck walked this morning with bounce and eagerness, as usual covering much more distance than I did what with zigzagging around the road and streaming off to investigate interesting smells.  He did, however, lie or sit down today when we stopped to look at the view for more than a minute or two, which is less typical.  I was also glad to have a sit down from time to time.

All around, very good long push before the walk, now I to taper down.  Feeling excellent about the prospects of the walk.  Gear tested, food ideas settled, body fit enough.  YEAH!!! Now a few logistical details, see if I can get a lift or two and book a hotel or two......and a nap would be good.
YEAH!!! Ara alguns detalls logístics, mira si algú em pot portar i reservar un hotel do dos.....i un migdiada seria fantàstic.

70K

1.  Took WAY too much food and then had to haul it and it was HEAVY.  Do not do this again.
Portava MOLT massa de menjar i pesava molt.  No ho faig un altre vegada.

2.  Take lots of dog food, his Chuckiness had three helpings and could probably had a fourth

3. When planning snacks, consider that I will probably share with the dog, hence the chocolate (poison to dogs) covered digestives were not a good idea, also they weight a freaking ton.

4.  Brought the ipod, didn't use it, but might have if there were much farther to go.
Portava el ipod però ho l'he utilitzat.

5.  My sense of direction continues to surprise me, I am pretty good at this (on a clear day in an area I basically know)

6.  There is no such thing as wilderness in this part of Spain

7.  The number of (exclusively male) cyclists that burst around every corner increases proportionally with my need to find a quiet bush behind which I can have a pee.

8.  Days with heavy cloud cover make for better walking, especially as I still haven't got a straw hat.

9.  Sunday mornings are VERY BUSY

10.  Chuck ignores nearly every cyclist, then one goes by that just HAS to be chased.  Honestly, at least 100 cyclists passed us, both directions, different speeds, but one was evil.

11.  Most pain goes away if you ignore it.  Just think of something else and suddenly you realise that that particular muscle, toe, knee, etc etc no longer hurts.
Quasi sempre, si tens dolor i no li fa cas, se'n va.

13.  I wore everything I brought, including the wooly hat at one point or another, except the spare t-shirt.  No rain!!!!

14.  Chuck is very tired.
En Chuck està ben cansat.

Doing. Fent.

I am listening to the Barça - Madrid game.
I actually don't like these games, I get so frustrated.  No m'agrada aquests partits, em trobo tan frustrada.
So I listen on the radio and do something else at the same time.   Llavors escolto al ràdio i faig altres coses al mateix temps.

Like reading Haruki Murakami, The Wind Up Bird Chronicles, in Catalan.
It is probably my least favourite of his book so far, though the third book of IQ84 was disappointing.
The protagonist is sooooo passive I find it irritating to read.

I have also packed for a longer walk tomorrow, aiming for around 70K, though the forecast calls for some rain and I am such a Catalan wimp these days!

And of course I'm writing on here.  I evidentment, estic escrivint aquí!

The excitement this evening in the grocery store was palpable, and fireworks were blasting off before the game, but now, it's the second half, they are behind by one and the village waits, tense.

OH!!!!!! 1-1!!!!!!!!!!  Els petards sonen!!!!!  Fireworks are going off!!!!!!!!

Coming home Tornant a casa

I was in BCN today for a course and I had to do a wee bit of shopping.  (Harry Potter DVD's for Youngest purchased with a gift card from a loving aunt! - OH, and Eldest went for music, instantly.  Both very happy.)
Totes dues estan molt contentes)

Anyway, there wasn't much of a break during the course, by the time you get up to the cafe, get through the queue, which was actually so long I bailed, sit down and chat a bit - which is worth doing, especially today, as some of the more experienced and more influential members of the community were there, well, no time for a pee break, nor for a drink.

Meaning that by the time I got home I was hungry, thirsty and in desperate need of a bathroom, and in fact a paracetamol went down pretty well to.

The man, bless his wonderful heart, had made a SPECTACULAR lunch.  Quiche with all manner of goodies on it, and raf tomatoes thinly sliced on top that had sort of oven dried till they were punch full of flavour.

No photos, I ate it toooooooo fast.  Followed up with a cup of tea.  OH; and Brits out there, I was informed that it is "terribly lower class to have tea with food. Tea is ALWAYS separate."  I must be terribly lower class, I have it with food, at meals and separate as well.

So, here's to wonderful husbands who make fantastic meals.  My rumination for the day.  Llavors, salut al meu home fantàstic qui cuinar àpats tan bones.  He rumiat pel dia.

Hope you have a good one!
Que vagi molt bé.

Why is it? Perquè és?

I really do want to know why it is that great writers tend to write such dark books.

Is there something about a happy book that says it has to be badly written?

Why?  Perquè?

I'm in! Ho faré! 100KtS is on anirá

And I'm going to WIN my division.  No, I'm going to Slaughter  my division.  Middle-aged Canadian Expats moms walking 100K (metric century) with their dog.  NO?  THIS IS SO COOL!  OK, here's the plan:  walking 100K - yup.  Raising money for a good cause, in fact this right now for me is the best cause.

So here's the deal.  D'acord, una mica d'història.

Do any of you read Fat Cyclist?  Let me give you some background.  He's a cyclist, and sometimes he's a little pudgy (normally in the winter).  He's also funny as all get out, and hates cancer, which took his wife.  SO he does a lot of really cool - and amazingly successful - fundraising ventures for Livestrong which is an organisation fighting cancer put together by Lance Armstrong...that cycling dude.  He's done a ton of different stuff, but one thing that has become annual is the 100 Miles to Nowhere.  Sounds stupid, and it kinda is, but it's actually a huge success, and has a certain ridiculous charm.  The deal was originally, and the heart of it still is, that you get on your bike, on rollers, or on your block and you go around and around an incredibly small course until, going nowhere, you hit 100 miles.  This year they are specifically raising money for Livestrong's support of Camp Kesem , which is a camp for siblings and children of families with cancer. Most excellent cause.

Cool, no?  In sort of a stupid kinda way.  Here's what fatty had to say about it so you can read a bit of what went on before this:

I did the first 100 Miles of Nowhere by myself, back before I knew it would be annual at all. The second one a bunch of us — from all around the world — did together, and people sent in their stories, many of which I published here.

Now, you may be wondering how I fit in here having never mentioned anything at all about cycling.  I sent him an email and asked if walking 100K would be OK too.  Good man answered, hours before doing the Boston Marathon, that he thought that would be just Jim dandy.  Now the luck I asked for yesterday?  Beth, you seem a pretty potent finger-crosser.  There are only 500 entries for this event, and last year they were gone in a day.  I wanted in.

Però, que passa amb les bicicletes?  No he parlat mai d'anar amb bicicleta. Volia entra.

I'm in.  Estic registrada.

So.  I'll be walking 100K, I'll be raising money for Livestrong, more specifically for Camp Kesem.  Gotta feel good about that.  I love how it's a camp for kids in families with cancer as a mom, as a teacher, as a friend.  Love that.

LLavors. M'ho encanta.

I'm excited.  Estic força emocionada.

I'm calling my own little version of this the 100K to somewhere, or 100KtS  100MoN, edició Català!!!!

Oh, and Chuck's coming with me!

Walked for about 6 hrs with Chuck yesterday, you want a definition of a happy puppy!  He was positively cavorting at time.  Every now and then he'd be overcome and sort of jump and wiggle around me before sprinting off again.  HAPPY DOG!

GOS CONTENT!

I was pretty happy too, though in fact it was a bit of a haul getting my butt out the door yesterday.  A certain mental sluggishness had slithered in.

What else.  Què més?

Cross your fingers for me, I am hoping to get something put together tomorrow, see how it goes.

I'll need a little luck.  Necessitaré una mica de sort.

Oh, and I've realised that I am avoiding my book.  Not a good sign.  I he realitzat que estic evitant de llegir el meu llibre actual.  No està cap bon senyal, això.

Egg Poachers

My folks very kindly sent on these egg poachers....and I was feeling kind of purist about the whole thing, but then I tried them.  It is easier, and you lose much less  of the white into the water....it also is a neater shape, as you can see below, but you have to add a little oil, so that is a bit of a negative.  I should try it without.  Plus it's pretty fun to do.

Yummmmm, no?

gaseosa

I have had a problem here, not a grave problem, but something that needed to be worked out.
He tingut una dificultat aqué, no era greu, però voldria solucionar-ho.

When we go to a cafe or a bar, I am always a little orphaned for something to drink.  I don't drink beer or wine, the juice is a small quantity and expensive, I won't drink bottled water on principle and the tap water in BCN is yucky tasting.  Safe and all, but it tastes bad.   Pop has SO much sugar in it, and often caffeine.  I've been down to Diet Coke, but I really don't like it.
No bec ni cerveses ni vi i suc, els venen en ampolles molt petites i molt cares, no bec aigua d'ampolles per temes d'ètica i l'aigua de l'aixeta en BCN està fastigós. Net, i segur però no fa bon gust. He begut alguns Coke lites, però a mi no em ve molt de gust.

Usually I have a decaf coffee, but sometimes you want something a little longer and cooler.

Then I remembered gaseosa.  It is normally mixed with wine here, it is a fizzy water, lightly lemony and lightly sweet.  Seems to always come with zero calories, as opposed to 140 for a can of coke - oh and after a little on-line search, a tablespoon of white sugar is 45 calories, so a can of coke has 3 and a bit tbls of sugar.  More than enough.

I recordava gaseosa.

Anyway, silly, but there it is, got a nice tasting drink that doesn't have too much wrong with it and now I've got a plan. Sometimes working out these ridiculous issues can feel so rewarding, no?

ugly socks and asparagus. Mitjons lletjos i esparracs

I think that these are truly ugly socks.  Maybe the ugliest I have ever owned, but they are thin and they wick and they keep my feet comfy in the heat....especially since my boots are silver lined so that they reflect radiant heat.  A lovely feature when it's cold out.  Sadly, this is Spain.

Mala sort.  Estem en Espanya.

What Youngest and I harvested this weekend!

And for my sins, I think I have finished the Canadian taxes!  YEAH!!!!  Next the Spanish ones.

YEAH!!!! Ara, els d'Espanya.

Technology envy

Hmmm, want want want
Hmmmm, vull....vull....vull.

ultra compact camera that takes great pictures

wristwatch with GPS, as in, it will tell me my lat and long (most important) and tell me how far I've gone alongside maybe the height I've gone up and down...the last would be nice but not so important.  Oh, and time and date too.

Met a man in the mountains who had one of those today and we had a nice chat about them.  I think I know exactly which one I want too!  Now to rationalise the purchase price!

Miravet, Tuesday morning as well; també dimarts al matí

This is getting epic...and all in four days!  We're nearly done though, this is the last post from the weekend, not last weekend, the weekend before, I am that far behind.

Deu n'hi do!

This is Miravet, a Templar castle build on and incorporating the structure of a previous castle from the Arabs who controlled most of Spain for 7 centuries.  The wife of our hosts had actually worked on the site when it was being excavated, so that was really cool too.  The only thing I could think of from this point of view is how terrible it would be to try and breach the castle when it was fully armed.

View from the top....la vista des d'amunt

The Ebro river, el riu d'Ebre

You can just see the old town there.  Pots justament veure la poble antic.

Now you can see it more clearly.  Ara la pots veure més clarament, no?

This view, from this corner sparked a new plan.  Canoe the Ebro.  Gotta do it.  Then they mentioned that there's a long distance walking path along the length of it.  Hmmm, walk up, canoe down. Sounds cool, no?

Seria guai, no?

Sited in BCN Vist en BCN

A heron!!!!  Honest to goodness, the man and I were crossing La Rambla and overhead flew a heron!

Un bernat pescaire!  No el nom d'un home, l'ocell!!!! No fotis!

What the heck?  Què passa?

Things I learned on the long walk, or why I am sometimes stupid.

These mostly go under, DUH!!!!  Més o menys, van al carpeta DUH!!!!

I am a guiri (Catalan and Spanish term for a Northern European, normally a tourist)  Sóc una guiri.  This means that:     Ho vol dir que:
  • I must wear a big straw hat.
  • I must bring a kercheif to wet and put around my neck for very hot days, especially with the sun behind me all day.
  • I have to rest in the shade, including lunch, even if it is chilly, SHADE.  Cal descansar en l'ombre, incós esmorzar, fins i tot si fa fred, OMBRE
I must always bring a map and compass.  Sempre porto una mapa i una brúixola.
  • Even when the route is super clear and there is no way I can get lost, bring them.
  • Because.....Perquè......
  • The route signs?  Can't trust them.   Les senyals dels camins? No pots tenir absolut confiance.
  • So you walk many more kilometers than you have to.  Llavors, camino molt més kilómeters que cal.
I really want a GPS watch and an ultracompact camera.  Really.

Maybe one of these days.  Potser un d'aquests dies.

the man, an advantage. L'Home, una avantatge

One of the (many) great things about having the Man around....he's spent years, nay decades doing a lot of exercise, so when I, newbie that I am, turn to him the other day and say that I am feeling weird and weak and yucky, and that my blood pressure must have dropped through the floor cause I keep head rushing, he says to me, 'you need something to drink'.  And I think, 'well, duh, he's so right.'  I'd run that morning, and hadn't drunk anything since, and as I hadn't brought water with me, I usually don't, I was dehydrated.  Seems like that might make you feel yucky and head rush-y, no?

Tampoc havia begut quan corria, no portava aigua, normalment, no ho faig.  Estava deshidrata.  Això et deixa amb un sensació que no trobis bé, que no?

He was right too.  We went off and had a drink, him beer, me gasosa and split a bag of chips and all was right in the world again.

L'Home estava un 100% correcte també.  Vam anar a un cafè, tenia jo un gasosa i el una cervesa i vam repartir una borsa de patates i desprès?  Tot bé en el món.

Smart man.  Un home ben llest.

Monday and Tuesday

Walked today, basically all day.  Figure I did 55K and 2000 M of ascending and another 2000 descending, about 11 hours walking time (I didn't time the breaks closely, they may have been longer).  I am aware that I have legs at this point.  His Chuckiness is sleeping, but not so tired that he couldn't try to hump me when I was dancing!  BAD DOG!!!!

PROU!!!!

Lovely day, no photos, the camera was a little too big to haul, which is a shame there were some incredible views and beautiful buildings.  Can I just also add, that you can't swing a cat in this country without hitting a monastery.  Also, that old saw about always bring a map?  It's a good one.  Added unnecessary mileage (kilometerage?) today.

Back to the story of last weekend, it has pictures.  OH; and I could do another blister picture!  Only one foot this time, still have the ugly socks so, so maybe one of these days....

Anim cap a l'historia d'aquest cap de setmana passat, perquè té fotos.  OH!

Onwards.  Anim.

Monday, we worked on their house.  They had just had some work done on it, so it was sort of like opening up the cottage, you know that weekend?  You do a whole lot of work and then have some fun.  We all worked steadily on Sunday evening and Monday, the man and I went for a short walk on Monday evening, up a local hill to take in the view, no camera on that trip.  Then Tuesday we went on another excursion.

First stop, this celler in El Pinell de Brai.  If you ever get the chance to visit it?  GO.  Totally cool building, and the most amazing thing of it all is that it was built by a village of 1000 people with mostly their own sweat.  The entire village mortgaged their houses and fields for the money and for three years, all of them, after a full day's work, went and build the celler.  Amazing.  The civil war came through here a few years later, and killed nearly everyone.  It was an area that was very badly hit. Only three houses were left standing and 90% of the population was killed.  The celler though, remained.  They took the roof and beams off early and guarded all of the roof tiles very carefully.  The planes flying over and bombing thought it had already been hit, and never bombed it.  There is considerably shrapnel damage visible, but the building still stands.

The detail work is amazing and typical of the period.  The architect was a great fan of Gaudi and you can see the influence in this building.

If you look carefully at those arches, they are a single layer of tile, mortared in place.  They've been there for 90 odd years, and through a brutal civil war.  That's workmanship.

The vault there?  It is supporting a GIGANTIC cement wine container and all the wine, something like 30,000 liters.  All on that little skinny vault.  Catalans knew vaulting like nobody.

Another view of those vaults, I included a corner of the guide for perspectiva on how big these are.

Totally beautiful, and they are HURTING for cash to keep it open, so if you're in the area, and even if you're not, well worth going and having a visit.

Asparagus and a creep Esparracs i un home potser predatori

Encara no he trobat un equivalent.

More about the trip later.  Today has been very quiet, and very nice.  Just the man and I hanging out around the house.  The kids are away with their grandparents and today is a quiet catch up day, though Chuck is currently reminding me that he needs a walk.....

Yesterday I went for a walk with his Chuckiness, and Radiolab had a new show up, so I made the walk a little longer so I could listen to it all....as I was walking up the road near town here, in the mountains, with Chuck off leash, a car slowed down behind me.  Now that happens from time to time cause they're nervous of the dog and don't want to hit it, or get it chasing them.  Then he came very nearly to a stop beside me.  Whatever, I looked over, never seen a woman walking uphill before?  Whatever.  But then he kept going really slowly and was obviously watching me in his offside mirror as he kept drifting and correcting as he drove.

I was walking on the side of the road with a drop down into the hills on it, as I always do...safer with all the car traffic than the side with a cliff going up beside you.  I got out my phone, cause that usually makes the creeps go away, but no change in behaviour, if I'd been really swift I'd have taken a photo of his license plate, but he looked like he was working up to a 3 point turn around.

Without a pause, I made a 90º turn and headed downhill into the woods.  My boy was mid 50s+, with slicked back hair, jowls, multiple double chins and a pink button down lacoste type shirt.  No way fat boy was going to be catching me in the woods, I am in far too good shape, sporting much more sensible footwear and know the woods better, plus once he's out of the car, I've got a dog.  No worries.  Needless to say, I didn't see him again.  Who knows what that was all about, could have been harmless, he could just be helluv stupid.  Whatever.

Cap problema. Meh.  És igual.

Truly, there is no animal in these hills that make me nervous, not the wild boar, the scorpions or the snakes, nor other dogs. Only thing that worries me from time to time?  Men.

Homes.

The upside?  Ended up in a bit of the mountains where I haven't been for a while...guess what I found!  Asparagus.  Lots of it. Mmmmmmmm, the man (my man) eventually phoned wondering where the heck I was.  I can get a wee bit obsessive in the face of wild fresh asparagus.

A l'inrevés? Em vaig trobar en un part dels muntanyes a on no he anat fa molt de temps, i saps què?  Vaig trobar molta d'esparracs.  Molts.  Mmmmmmmm.

Yummy.  Molt bons.

Sunday, diumenge

This was the big official walking day...the real reason we were there, I guess.  We were in Montsant in Priorat, and I can assure you that Priorat, though low in population is very very big in mountains.

We started out climbing steeply up onto the top of the mountains.  This one is kind of like a mesa in the US, steep sided escarpments with relatively flat tops to them that you can walk for quite a long way on.  Deeply cut by rivers and layered like so many cakes.

A view over a cliff.  I was quite cautious about the drops.  Some weren't.

We went down here.  The camera flattens things a lot.  We had already been going down some quite long drops, rock with gravel on and cliffs on one side.  It was a little more intense than I had bargained on and I was glad that there were no kids or dogs with us.

Looking back up where we had come from.  Mirant amunt el mateix ruta.

At this point we lost the trail and ended up going down a dry river bed, like being kids, scrambling over and under branches and rocks, it was honestly, a lot of fun.

Molt divertit.

Eventually we found a path, and then the river.  We didn't have time to stop and swim, nor even dip our feet in the water.  I was the only one, I think, that had brought food and everyone was in a mad hurry to get to a restaurant and eat.

Estava l'única, em sembla, que portava menga i tots tenen moltes ganes de sortir i anar a menjar.

The food in the restaurant was fabulous, really very good indeed and we had a lovely long chatty lunch.  Then most people went home, but I was a really lucky one, cause one of the couples invited me to go with them to their village reasonably nearby till Tuesday, the man was coming up on the train!  No funover yet!

More later.  Més desprès

Sat afternoon Dissabte a la tarde

Well, the celler was the morning. This is the afternoon.   We had a picnic lunch outside the celler, complete with wine for some. Then piled back into the cars to drive here

These are the ruins of a Carthusian monestary.  In 1835 the Spanish kings? Government? seized all of the property of a vast range of church and specifically monastic holdings.  These particular monks, who lived isolated lives in cells, dominated in a truly feudal way a fairly large swath of land that makes up all of the historic comarque of Priorat.  Given the opportunity, the peasants went in, burned stole and then took the place apart.  Much of the building material was likely seized to use for construction on their buildings as well.

It was a beautiful place, they even had toilets, each one, with drains.

You can see that I like doorways and windows.
Pots fixar que m'agrada portes i finestres.

The wife of the man from the celler had recommended a walk to us while we were picnicking, a loop above the monastery.  Being an group of hikers/mountain types, that seemed a good plan.

Saw this flower, don't know what it is.

We found this old masia, mostly tumbled down and with a SPECTACULAR view.

It also had 3 fonts, one of which was piped down here:  També té tres fonts, un va per aquí:

A lovely day.  After this we piled into cars again and headed to an alberg to sleep.  Dinner was good if somewhat tepid, provided by the managers of the alberg and I slept well, not everyone did as some snored.  More later.

Sorry about the radio silence Em sap greu per el silenci!

But, what an incredible long weekend.

Però quin pont increïble!

I barely even know where to start.  Maybe the beginning would be good.  I thought I would be away overnight for an excursion with the grup de muntanya, but then we got an invite to stay with a couple from the group and in the end I was gone four fantastic days.  This is going to take a couple of posts to cover.  It was, singularly fabulous.

Quasi no sé a on haig de començar.

OK.  First stop?  A winery!  Never been to one before, and I think I have now officially been spoiled.  Indeed we hit three wineries, cellers in Catalan...pronounced sayeys.  This has been a weekend that was a little winey!

Deu n'hi do!

This is a winery that specialises in very fine wines.  They produce three red wines (working on a white) and some olive oil.  Their wines are divided into three types, Crestes, from vines between 15 and 50 years old, Salanques, from vines between 70 an 90 years old and Doix, from vines between 80 and 105 years old, all grapes picked by hand.  For all the wines, every single grape is sorted by hand!

Aquest celler fa només vins d'alta qualitat.

Now, that's about all the advertising I can give you, cause I don't drink!  The crowd seemed to think it was pretty darned good, and the chance to walk around the vine yard and the celler and hear about the process.  When the vines are pruned - not until the very last leaf has fallen, as there is still photosynthesis if it has even one leaf, and when the branches are pruned, after the last chance of frost - alongside information about how they go about producing the wines. Their philosophy is to let the wines from each year be a distillation of that year, how hot it was, how cool....how much rain....they are not aiming at uniformity of product the way that a large vintner, like Freixenet, does....they want to let the grapes dictate the flavour of that years wine.  Pretty cool.

A mi trobo això molt interessant.

Now, some photos:  Ara, fotos:
