Medicine

One of the things I find confusing about living in different parts of the world is that what is considered accepted wisdom in one place, is completely the opposite somewhere else.

Two cases in point. Eldest today had an appointment with an optometrist....there is some confusion over some of this because of the language barrier, but she has been told that she can have contacts, but must where either the contacts or glasses all the time or her eye sight will be worse in the end. The optometrist in Canada, however, felt that she should NOT wear them all the time because it will make her eyes worse in the end. What's a girl to do.

Second case. Chuck is worse. He is wheezier, though he doesn't have a fever at the moment, he has started on antibiotics. Thank goodness they are almost free here. The doctor however advised us to give him warm milk with honey as it is a decongestant. Exactly the opposite from the common wisdom in Canada....you go OFF dairy when your congested there.

I'm not even going to go into the differences for what to eat or not eat if you are pregnant/nursing. On that note, Kate mentioned that too many wild mushrooms can damage your liver. Now this is a health hazard I have never heard of before. Then again I have never had a chance to eat enough wild mushrooms to cause damage to any of my internal organs....

Maybe you should get a second opinion on the glasses thing. I wear mine all the time and my prescription hasn't changed in years, but for kids it's normal to change until they stop growing. I also heard that sleeping with some light can cause nearsightedness, but now it seems that they're not too sure. What's a person to believe? We give our children milk when they're congested and it doesn't make them worse, but it doesn't make them any better either. The mushroom thing is new to me, but I guess everything in moderation is the safest way to go.

Is there an ophthalmologist there your daughter could see?
As for Chuck, I've now heard that the no dairy thing is wrong.

In Germany and France common wisdom has it that no dairy products should be consummed during antibiotics intake as they lessen the effectiveness of the medication.
What's wrong with wearing normal but cool glasses as such?
I'd have thought she'd like "the little intellectual" image it would project?
Maybe preteens in Barcelona are different from Berlin's or Riga's in projecting intellectual coolness?
Your photos made me drool for the fantastic cheeses in your pixs.
Brought back some French cheeses from Berlin in September and all the other passengers on my flight avoided me and my hand luggage with terrible frowns.
Took me some time to realize what it was all about as I was simply relishing the thought of indulging in a cheese feast soon and couldn't imagine that one wouldn't immediately recognize the smell of ripe camembert.
The cheese aroma enveloped me like an invisible shield!
Embarassing to say the least.
But my realization came too late.
I definitely wasn't dumping my packet of great cheeses!

I think dogs are lactose intolerant so I wouldn't give him milk.

People used to leave milk out for hedgehogs in the UK but that is now widely frowned upon.
Has Chuck got Kennel cough?

Sorry Chuck isn't getting better...

I don't know that the mushrooms actually damage your liver, but one job of the liver is to filter toxins and from what I understand even the edible wild mushrooms have stuff that needs to be worked on, so it makes your liver work hard. Or something like that. But maybe not. I heard it in the context of some doctor on TV saying you shouldn't eat more than X grams per week, but I could be wrong...

Theresa: I am going to e-mail my opthamologist in Canada and see what she says....

Beth: For all we know she saw an opthamologist, oh the joys of medicine in a language you can't speak well....

GM: That is interesting about the dairy and ingestion with antibiotics, I don't know about the kids here and cool intellectual glasses, but for eldest anyway, they are NOT cool...I would have carried my ripe camambert shield with pride as well as anticipation...I can just picture it...

Boo: Good lord, what is Kennel cough? He didn't like the milk, so we didn't do it again, but I am currently burying his pills in cheese so he'll eat them...makes his poo stink kinda badly but he seems happy enough.

Kate: I have to confess I am delighted to be in a position to even contemplate liver problems from wild mushrooms...YAHOO!
