Short stories

Picked up a new book to read last night and didn't realise it was an anthology of short stories till I started the second one.

I have a confession to make.

I don't really like short stories very much at all.  I'm not entirely sure exactly why, but....meh.

The ride is too intense and often dreary, maybe sorrow, horror and loathing are easier to evoke?

I'm persevering because I really like the author, but, ultimately, I may bail.  The first story had centered around police brutality and torture.  Not making me feel to motivated for number two.

Oh, I like short stories, but I'm not into the police brutality and torture at all. Well, maybe the second story will be better...

I like happy short stories. Do those exist?

yeah, I know what you mean. I don't want to get too invested in the characters because I know they'll be gone in, like, five more pages. But I'm a slow reader so it's a good way for me to sample a new author without committing too much time.

Mother T, not sooo bad so far, but I am not beginning the stories eagerly, shall we say.

ElP, sometimes I wonder, thank goodness for Sr. Pratchett!

Trish, yeah, but it also tends to give me a not so good impression of the author, cause I don't really like the ride. For me it is the other way, I am willing to read short stories by a writer I really like, but not an unknown. Even then, I may not read any or them all. Roald Dahl is a classic example. Love his books, his biographies, the works. His book of short stories? MEH. Too freaky. Pass.

I know exactly what you mean! I have never liked short stories - even when they are 'good' ones. Perhaps I look to a book for a more long term relationship? I love sinking into a new novel and getting to know all the people and a new world. I tried reading some short stories in Catala and had the same feeling. Even though its hard to get through a big thick book in another language I'd rather get stuck in. Kate

Kate, I agree, even in Catalan I prefer a novel. I think the phrase 'something to sink into' is quite apt.
