run run run run run run run

I have been thinking about running.

I hate running.

I have always hated running.

Loathed it in fact.

It is just so convenient though, and cheap.

I get up every morning anyway to walk the dog...why not jog the dog...it even rhymes.

I have been reading a bunch of bloggers who are taking it up, or who love to run, and one of my cousins has taken it up as well, and I am so impressed.

I found this plan on line through one of those bloggers that has started up; it's the couch to 5K plan....incrementally a little more each week, and at the end of 9 weeks, theoretically, you can run 5K three times a week in about 30 minutes each...(variations obviously occur blahblahblah).

The shoes look comfy and some of them almost look cool...even if you do look like you are from the jetsons....

Then we went and saw part of the BCN marathon, and let me tell you, if you stood me beside some of those runners, you would be gambling on me finishing the course not them...pot bellies, bandy legs, hunched backs, overweight....whatever.....but let me tell you I can barely make it to the bus stop,

and it bugs me.

I was talking to the man about it.

He thought it would be a good idea, but pointed out that I hardly seemed enthusiastic.

He is so right.

I want to like running....

it's just

I don't.

Wow! Good luck with that running business!

I think walking works just as well!!!
I'm certain I read that somewhere!

Hate is not a great motivator when it comes to exercise. But if you do take up running – be careful. Take it slowly. I’ve heard (a rumour?) that more doctors are now specializing in orthopedics because of the damage caused to the body due to running.

My form is bad, and I'm slow, but I love the feeling I get from finishing a good run. It's hard to describe why I like it. Give it a try. You'll be surprised at how much easier it is than you think. Just take it slow, and by all means buy good shoes. They're expensive, but they're worth it. Good luck!!

You sound so conflicted...and isn't exercise hard enough (for most of us, anyway) without having your mind twisted into a pretzel.
The best answer is probably that you give it a try and see...but aren't those shoes kind of expensive? And then if you hate it, you end up feeling guilty because you spent all that money on special shoes...I don't know. It's all so complicated.
I'm lucky-my parents bought us all a Wii for Xmas and I LOVE Wii Fit. It's fun, varied and NO shoes required!
Anyway- good luck with that....

Saw the bus leave the stop while I was about to reach it. I had to race it all the way to the next bus stop in order to catch it.

Whether you like it or not, running can prove useful ;)

I always feel sorry for dogs that are taken out for a run rather than a walk because the can't have a good sniff. They look like they enjoy the actual running but they are puzzled about why their person doesn't want to stop and smell the lovely smell. (Mind you it might stop Chuck rolling in the lovely smell!)

I know it is difficult to get going, but there is more to it than the satisfaction you get from improved health etc. You can also see it as an opportunity to "meditate" while running. Some music in your ears and good shoes are essential items, then you can just let your thoughts flow, think about stuff undisturbed by demanding people and situations.

Give yourself a mental carrot of some sort, then just run run run! ;-)

I kep getting told of the lovely feeling you get when you get to the endorphin high, which I never reached. Don't aim too hard though - Kate's boss has ruined his knees by running marathons. A half marathon is as far as it is reasonable and sensible to run apparently - but as that is over 10 miles and I would be pushed to walk it these days I will say no more on the matter

She, I do walk a lot, minimum an hour a day and probably more...it isn't quite the same for the cardio-vascular thing....then again, the people I know who walked a lot are still in good shape when they are aged.....

Beth, I would be stunned if I actually got to the stage where I was hurting myself doing it....

Hula, I was hoping you'd join the discussion....good shoes...PRICEY...maybe I can save up...

Beth, that is the issue, giving it a try has a 100 Euro price tag....

elP...see? That's exactly what I mean.

I know what you mean, but Chuck gets a minimum of three walks a day, and one of them is always nearly an hour off leash in the mountains, so he would survive twenty min of walking three times a week...he's a spoiled dog....

Swenglish...see...this is also what I mean...I even like reading Runner's World magazine...the thing is interesting for crying out loud....I used to do weight training, and I loved the feeling of getting stronger and working out....meh....

OMG Helen...I cannot even imagine wanting to try a marathon, it is nothing but a study in PAIN....5 k,I'd be so pleased with myself, the man does 10 on a regular basis up and down a freaking mountain, makes me feel pathetic.

Switch to a bike. I just bought one and love the thing. Easier on the knees, too.

Yeah, but it isn't such fast good exercise....

I am with you on that one. My sister loves running and wants to do a marathon (or half one anyway) and she wants to do a triathlon. I wouldn't mind the triathlon but I can't swim and I don't like to run. She is week in cycling. I don't know if I am strong in it, but I like it. I am not fond of the stationary bike though so winter sucks. I don't mind the expensive ones in the gyms but then it costs money and more time because I have to go there and I don't like the environment a lot. I was walking for awhile, but really don't like that either. I am a slug; it is becoming clear.
