A little less tired today, and as I mentioned yesterday, Hula's little gift came!!!
Look!!!! a book!
Impatient as always, Youngest and I tore it from it's wrapping in the post office, and the book fell open to this page which made me laugh right out loud right there in the post office.
Youngest didn't get the joke.
This is the on trial rocker....I think it is going to get the nod....comfy!!! A kind of weird industrial art deco design or something or other, but comfy and in my book that goes a long long way.
Now we need to instill in Chuck an intuitive understanding about the danger of those rockers before he gets a paw or his nose squished.
On another note. What do you do with a book you hate? Do you keep reading doggedly? Do you bail? Skip ahead? Check out the ending?
I am currently reading a loathsome book. Not so bad that I have chucked it away, but but but....I do. not. like. it. Not one little bit. Nino Ricci's Origin of the Species. I think I mentioned that before, it is worth bearing in mind. The protagonist is a whining little waste of air space blindly blathering his way from one non-event to another inflicting pain on those around him in a truely sightless and thoughtless way. Can you see why I like it so much? If he would just stop the infernal whinging!
Ugh.
I think maybe it is time for a new book.
*shudder*

In my humble opinion, there are way tooooo many GREAT books out there to read to stick with one that is so loathsome! I used to force myself to finish books, but I don't anymore. I have too many that I'm salivating to get to!!!
I love that chair! Way cool!
If I’m not enjoying a book, I bail but I give it about 50 pages before doing so. I don’t care if it’s garnered great reviews. If I don’t like it – pffft, gone!
So many books, so little time...
One squished paw and Chuck should learn all about rockers!
My favorite page is the one about the tiara being on back order. I also like the one that says, "It's not all about me? Well, that IS distressing news." Enjoy.
I love that rocker. I'd keep it.
Definitely bail on a bad book. Give it a chance and then move on. Life is just too short and there are too many good books out there!
Unless you swore to read it for a challenge or have to finish it for a class, in which case: reading as quickly as possible is in order.
I have come across a Swedish writer whose books I dislike (Björn Ranelid). I have given him a fair chance, I have tried and tried, but now I have given up on him. He is too verbose and weird. He writes prose as if it were poetry in some funny kind of way. Cannot explain it any better. My brother hates him. But I keep his two books on my shelf as a reminder not to buy any more. I don't want to make the same mistake three times!
You know what I always quit a book I can't abide. I believe reading is a pleasure not a discipline. Many people in my book group disapprove of this and have a strange protestant work ethic about finishing books. Not me. I might die tonight and I don't want my last conscious moments spent reading some tome I hated
Life's too short to read bad books.
BTW: I tried your lemon mousse on my family and everyone loved it!
She, part of the issue is here that I don't have all THAT many books to salivate over....sitting in that chair right now, I think it is going to be staying....
Beth, YELP!!! We're trying to avoid that....
Hula, I love that one too....that is distressing news...LOVE IT!
JG, I was hoping you'd wade in, you seem like a determined book finisher...glad to hear you bail sometimes too...
Swenglish...there are some writers I have sworn off, this is looking like one of them.....
Boo and trev...know what you mean, though I skim ahead to see if there is a major theme...
Beth, so glad you liked the mousse, the photos looked lovely...
There's only one book in my entire life that I didn't finish, and for good reason. It bore me so much that I managed only to read one page a day.
Now, for all the other books, even when they're bad, I'm too curious not to finish them. I would be frustrated not to know the end, thinking "who knows, maybe it gets better near the end".
Also, I usually know before buying the book whether I'll like it or not. The synopsis, and even sometimes just the title, are enough to give me a vague idea of what it might be about.
I agree - never bother with a book you don't enjoy unless you have to read it. there are some I have given up on and come back to (War and Peace, and Gormentghast eg) but generally, no. If you can bear to read online there are a lot of full text transcrpts of out of print books on the internet now, which may be better than ploughing on with a book you hate just because it is there. Like the look of the rocker
If I am more than 1/2 way in and it is insufferable, I quit. Then I recycle it because I don't want to pass it on to pain anyone else.
I love your new chair! Perfect spot to read a book! I really like the artwork in your new book, too.
The book that cured me forever of slogging through books I am hating is.....Proust - A la recherche de temps perdu (Remembrance of Things Past) which is SO famous and SO celebrated that I kept thinking there MUST be a reason and it HAS to get better - but was SOOOO awful that I now give up pretty promptly if I'm not enjoying! nice rocker! JC
elP, if they are bad enough I satisfy my curiosity by skipping to the end...this one I bailed. I donteven want to know. The character described himself as emotionally bankrupt, and I would add in sociopathically narcissistic. I simply don't care.
Helen, I was actually discussing blogging and on-line reading with the man and our guest, and I do consciously read on-line and especially blogs because I cannot get enough books that I want to read.....
Mmichele, I finally bailed with about an eigth to go, and I am glad.
Carla, I'm sitting in the chair as we speak...it's a keeper, we are arguing over who gets to sit in it. A sure sign that it's AOK
JC, Atwood did it for me....
