We're doing OK

According to the Economist, a report by Save the Children UK tells us that Japan is the best place for kids to grow up, followed by Spain and then in third, Canada.

Next time the kids are grousing about how hard done by they are I know what to tell them.

Hmm... the report doesn't say squat about the quality of the education system. I guess it pretty much means "your kid has good chances to survive", and nothing more ;). How's the math teacher beheading going, by the way?

How interesting - what criteria was the Economist going by to set up this list?
I've read that Japan's school kids are the most stressed out bunch in the world.
Student suicide rate even amongst preteens is the highest in the world, mobbing (bullying for you)is accepted as inevitable etc. etc.
Like I'd hate to be either teacher or student in that country!
Glad you've got answers for your kids though!!! GM

Really! That is good news. It's not so bad being third, even if it is -25 C out there this morning with the windchill. Weather is not our strong point in Canada. Pity! I will go on over, out of curiousity to see how other countries rate. I've been crazy to go live in New Zealand and if it wasn't for their pesky immigration constraints, I'd be on there on the beach right now. I wouldn't have any problem with a green, beachy Christmas.

Personally I think the report is a fair amount of whooey...it is primarily survival rates, but it is the ECONOMIST, which is British, and not known for their social values. Also the British got NAILED on another one of these surveys recently that actually included things like the level of happiness love and acceptance felt by the children. Low low low in the UK it seems.....

I have to confess, I would hate to be a Japonese teacher or kid too, it sounds super stressful. Apparently Korea is like that as well.

Bodhi, that's interesting, I always that NZ was quite open and welcoming to immigrants. I know several people that have gone there....weird. Merry Xmas and all that....

Yep, I heard that, too, about the Japanese school kids and stress.

I wish the US education system were better. They keep throwing money at it, but it doesn't seem to trickle down to the classroom, including teacher's salary. I think administration sucks it all up.
