It strikes me as weird that things seem to run in batches.
I recently went through a run of so-so books. They were fine, but my enthusiasm was...low.
Now I have had a lovely run or wonderful books. Hope this keeps going.
It has just occurred to me that the end of my run of , meh, mediocre books coincides with the end of the massive battalion of anti-histamines, and more, that I have been taking.
Possibly the end of drug-induced comatosis (does that word exist? It should) is related to my newfound enthusiasm.
Did you also know that in Spanish a ? and a ! do not necessarily end a sentence? You can get the most amazing masses of punctuation, for example, "¡Hola! ¿qué tal?, ¿bueno?" See? All that punctuation and there is only one official sentence there and only one capital! The accent may be in the wrong place. I can't remember and I am too lazy to go downstairs and check. Ah well.

I get like that too with books and often find it's more my attitude than the book itself, although some books... The Pull of the Moon (E. Berg) I adored recently but also because I am "that" age, also quite liked The History of Love (Nicole Krauss), This Is Where I Leave You (Jonathan Tropper), Shadow Tag (Louise Erdrich)...I could go on and on!
I'm always amused by the free range nature of Spanish punctuation. A sort of more is better approach really.
I am coming to the end of a run of good books, and need to find a good paperback to read on the train for next week as the books I have at home at the moment are all hardbacks and will be h-e-a-v-y!
Yes, my feeling for books often runs with what's happening around me. But there's a lot to be said for research too. I like to read up on an author or title before I actual go out and make a commitment to a certain book that's on my radar - it helps me clear out a lot of mediocre stuff. Shelfari.com is a good place to start.

I am! I am an unabashed Grisham fan, and I got a copy of his latest book before it was released.
That's gonna be pretty nerdy/geeky of me, but right now I'm thinking about all the people working for grammar/spell checking software companies, and how they must hate Spanish now (I'm pretty sure they already hated French for its complicated grammar with as many exceptions as it has rules :) )
JG, I am glad about both feeling less flattened and reading better books too! I love the one I am reading at the moment as well...which is so nice.
Kim, It's true some books transcend however we're feeling, but many can be dragged down by our feeling at a time. Glad I've got a good run going. Makes life better.
