The man and I went down to the house again today...it was good we went together, we had a chance to talk things over without interruptions. I had been trying to solve the kitchen puzzle, and had to go over and see it...too visual....I need to actually see the space....
Getting going with it...Geez it is slow and the man doesn't love talking about it....

I might just add that I am in a PURGING mood!
Too bad we aren't going to be able to move into the house for a while...we need a roof that stays up if nothing else. Must continue on the hunt for an architect. The first one was slow, patronising and does little design work (???), the second the man didn't like...she of the quote for less than a year. Not good with communication, nor with providing info, asked some folks with a lovely house for their architect's name....great...only speaks Spanish.
Ho hum.

....later...I found these great photo resources for kitchens...I got so tired of the Architectural Digest type giant semi-professional kitches. They're so...shiny. Check out here for Historic Ontario Kitchens, and here for a flickr group of world kitchens.
Don't get me wrong, I don't want THOSE kitchens...but something a little less shiny would suit the house better.
I'd say that more than two thirds of the world's population uses their dirt floor as the major work surface in their kitchen.

Shiny kitchens = having to keep them shiny. Too much work for me. Give me a counter surface that lets stains and splotches be camoflaged, I'm a happy camper.
I've been picking warm colors and natural surfaces for the countertops and backsplash. I want cozy and warm with a touch of shiny..as in stainless steel appliances.
oh I am SO with Bodhi!!! too much work for me too. but I love a nice kitchen. I hate to watch these makeover shows and the people complain about the kitchen. I would LOVE to have some of those kitchens!!!

I hope you manage to keep those beautiful tiles whatever you do... My advice would be to forget the architect, and design it yourself. Then get a contractor (who hopefully speaks some english) to help you figure out what works and what doesn't and he finds the right people to get the various jobs done. That's pretty much how they do things here, and it seems to turn out just fine.
Good luck with it in any case, and I'm so excited you bought that house!

Bodhi, the apartment we are in now has smooth, shiny off white cabinets. I spend my life cleaning them.
Hula...appliances! I have to chose those as well. Gaaaa
Beth, yeah...I don't watch them...though when I was in the airport I saw a couple of guys who have a show on the HGTV in Canada...that was kind of cool. Everyone left them alone....

Christina, I know what you mean, but the architects here seem to function like engineers too, and the roof needs some professional advice. a lot of it.
We may end up doing that for a bunch of the work, but if we have to get an architect in....well...we may have to continue.
